NO STITCH CATARACT SURGERY

PREOPERATIVE TESTS FOR CATARACT SURGERY

A complete eye examination by the operating physician is required before cataract surgery is performed. At that time, the surgical technique will be discussed with the patient. The physician may also discuss with the patient any problems that may affect the surgery or the decision to have the surgery. The surgeon will talk with the patient about the effect that any other diseases will have on the outcome of the surgery, such as glaucoma or retinal eye disease.

A biomicroscope or slit lamp is used to determine what type of cataract a patient has and the best method for its removal. The prescription for the intraocular lens is determined by taking measurements of the eye. A keratometer measures the curvature of the cornea an ultrasonic A-scan unit is used to measure the length of the eye. The measurements are then used to individually determine the type and the strength of the implant to use during the surgery.

Your ophthalmologist may choose to consult with your regular physician to determine if any other medical tests or exams may be required before you have cataract surgery.

You will be given a prescription for drops to use in your eye for several days before your cataract surgery.
