LASER VISION CORRECTION

WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER THE PROCEDURE

On the day of your procedure, you should arrive at the laser center as rested and relaxed as possible. Some patients may choose to have valium prior to their procedure. In the laser room you will be seated in a patient chair similar to that used in a dentist's office. An instrument called a lid speculum will be placed between your upper and lower eyelids to prevent you from blinking. The following shows how the laser in applied in 3 easy steps:

Step 1  First a topical drop is applied on the eye to numb the eye so you won't feel any discomfort. Then, using an instrument called a microkeratome, a small protective flap is made exposing the corneal tissue underneath.
Step 2 During this phase, Dr. Wall uses the VISX laser to apply a cool beam of light, which gently removes very thin layers of tissue from the cornea. The laser is programmed specifically for each patient, and is controlled by the computer, which determines how many pulses need to be applied. The total time of the laser is less than 60 seconds per eye.
Step 3  In this final step, the protective flap that was created in step one is gently placed back in its original position and begins healing immediately. Your eye creates a natural vacuum to keep the flap shut until the protective layer of the eye grows to keep it together. It heals within 12 hours and does not require stitches or a patch.

Once your procedure is complete, you will be able to go home to rest. You will be given a post-op kit that will contain eye drops and protective eye shields. The eye shield is to be worn at bedtime for several days to prevent rubbing the eye and damaging the flap. Most patients notice dramatic visual results within the first 24 hours following the procedure and are able to resume all of their regular activities within the next day or two.
